Maroon was a candidate for the 2009 Color Vote. It was last place in color vote, losing to Aqua and also heavily behind Lavender in votes. Despite being a color vote candidate, it was never a bait item. Maroon was criticised for looking too much like red, but the same could be said for Aqua looking like Blue.
