In 2010, Wikia, the place our wiki host, announced they would be rolling out a new layout (skin) titled ''Oasis''. The new skin was very limited, and was mandatory. Most wikis on Wikia were opposed to the change, making many wikis move off Wikia to other wikifarms (or to independently host themselves). The Club Penguin Wiki took part in the move off of Wikia as well. The community heavily opposed the skin, and after a vote officially declared that it would move off Wikia. The new independent wiki was created at clubpenguinwiki.info, which is where it is today. We are hosted on an independent server generously donated by one of our users, [[User:Andrew|Andrew]], who also assisted us with a lot of technical work during and after the move.

History

Beginnings (2006 - 2007)

The Club Penguin Wiki was founded on December 20, 2006 by V-Rex. It was created on the wikifarm called Wikia. At this time the wiki consisted of a few hundred articles, being edited by a few different people.

Webmaster Era (2007 - 2009)

After the departure of V-Rex, the Club Penguin Wiki was governed by a webmaster system. The webmaster system set up a bureaucracy, led by two leaders (or "Webmasters"). From 2007 - 2009, the webmasters were TurtleShroom and Barkjon. After the resignation of TurtleShroom in 2009, and Barkjon becoming largely inactive, 2 new webmasters were appointed. The new webmasters were Sharkbate and Hat Pop. However, they were only webmasters for about 2 months until the webmaster system was abolished completely. The webmaster system was generally unsuccessful, keeping the wiki in a recession with poor content and an unstable community with a lot of fighting and arguing.

Democratic Era (2009 - Present)

In 2009, Tigernose and Seahorse started a campaign to abolish the webmaster system, as it was too bureaucratic due to the little voice the common user had on the governance of the wiki. After an offical vote, the webmaster system was officially abolished. A new democratic system was put in place, in which the users vote on new policies and other changes. Seahorse implemented a new policy system which summarized all of the rules and policies of the wiki. It acted as the wiki's constitution. Administrators were now given the role of policing the wiki per the policy, rather than being seen as rulers of the wiki. These changes led the wiki into a surge of edits, reaching several thousand articles and a very stable community.

Move from Wikia

In 2010, Wikia, the place our wiki host, announced they would be rolling out a new layout (skin) titled Oasis. We are hosted on an independent server generously donated by one of our users, Tux, who also assisted us with a lot of technical work during and after the move.
