Project Reboot

Over the course of this summer, I will be working and discussing with other users to update wiki features which no longer seem to be working as a result of a smaller community. Below is a list of ideas I currently have - which may change over time as I receive feedback from users.

(1) Partially restrict the Council

This would see a partial revert back to the pre-council era when most decisions were made by admins (this is part of their job). The original council was created with the intention to fix up policies only, but was modified to accommodate other issues. Ever since the load of issues we had back in 2011 were resolved, it has created the impression that everything should be voted on, by the community. Another thing about the original IRC council was that it was an admin-only vote (with the exception that a few trusted non-admins would be allowed to vote).

By restricting most topics to admin-only votes, hopefully we can bring back the teamwork that the admins possessed. The following issues would be restricted to admins:

  • The creation, modification, and abolition of policies
  • The addition of a new user group (pending staff approval)
  • The addition of new extensions (pending staff approval)
  • Anything that involve staff implementing a feature

The following areas will be open to all users for voting:

  • Modification of user right promotion procedure
  • Any issue that concerns articles (except the Manual of Style)
  • Other technical issues that do not involve staff (e.g. logo, favicon, CSS)

Having said that, all users are still free to suggest ideas and discuss on them before the admins vote. The bureaucrat veto rule remains untouched.

(2) Overhaul the Rollback Right

Several ideas have been placed on the council so far but none received an adequate response. The current ideas so far are:

  1. Have rollbacks promoted/demoted at admin discretion - all requests are closed.
  2. Have users' rollback rights evaluated on a regular basis - promotions and demotions are made then; requests are still open.

(3) Overhaul the Penguin of the Month

As users no longer get nominated by users, this program is becoming more and more forgotten. As suggested by Seahorse a few months ago, one way to solve this would be to make this an election based platform. My extension on this would be to have the admins pick two or three candidates. The previous Penguin of the Month winner will have the special opportunity to select a third or fourth candidate, if they want. Another option on the ballot would be a 'no winner' option - for users who truly think none of the listed candidates should win. This should take up the first week of the month. Each candidate then has the opportunity to make a statement on why they think they should win. At the same time voting will be opened to all users. All previous nomination/voting practices apply. Admins may still qualify as candidates.

(4) Modify the CPW Awards

In past years we have had three candidates per award and it often turns out to be several users winning a handful of awards. This year, although the community size is smaller, it would probably be a better idea to make a few changes to include more users. Below is my suggestion for changes:

  • Voting will switch from the Alternative Vote (AV) to First-Past-the-Post (FPTP).
  • The number of candidates will increase from three to a maximum of five (there may be less than five but not more).
  • Award voting will run through all of December to accommodate Christmas break.
  • An honour roll list will be created for all users who the admins' think have made a positive impact on the wiki this year.
  • Club Penguin awards will be removed.

(5) Reopen the favicon vote

The favicon vote will be re-opened with a specific design in mind: the idea suggested by Hat Pop in the last vote.
