Key is a type of pin. There is five keys for now in CP. Three let you to a room. Others don't do it.

Rockhopper's Key pin: flip to last page in a book and go to Captain's Quarters!

Moss Key pin: members-only pin what lets you go to Underwater. -
Puffle Bat Key pin: only key what is not a party pin or a key to a room. -
Old Key pin: a scavenger hunt reward. -
Expedition Key pin: available during The Great Snow Race. That did let you into into Herbert's lair.
- Key Hunt of Halloween Party 2012. One of Key Hunt keys is black version of Puffle Bat Key pin. The pin was released before the party.
