Club Penguin Wiki:Social

From the Club Penguin Wiki, the free, editable encyclopedia about Club Penguin
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Ever since the move, the level of user activity has been quite low, and I think it's about time we change it around. Currently, I'd say most of our active users are not active editors (main reason being there's nothing to edit), but are quite social on IRC, with off-topic chat. I think we need to make this place (not saying IRC necessarily, just the wiki) more social and on-topic. Again, this is not a social networking site, but what I mean is that we need to make it less boring for our users.

I also say that the activity level on the recent changes hasn't gone up ever since we moved. In fact, I think it's going down. We need to bring it back up, or this place will be a quiet, boring place where nobody would bother joining. Some suggestions we can do:

  • Have a Club Penguin party review page where users can express their opinions on a recent event.
  • Change the look of the wiki (custom css and an image to replace File:Touchdown2.png on the mainpage) to make this place more friendly and welcoming.

This wiki has indeed become more mature, but a little bit over the line to the point that some future stars of the wiki don't seem interested to join. Just compare the wiki now to the same wiki a couple of years ago. It may have been more chaotic, but its users are what makes the place a success. If you have any suggestions, just leave a comment below. --LordMaster96 01:39, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

  • Agreed, we should socialize our users and make them focus on the wiki in the same time. Well and make the wiki less boring too with something fun and creative for the wiki, like parties or contests. Guess what? Welcome00 is back after a year! 17:31, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
    • We have an official parties page, but it's only been used once. I think that the regular admins should be able to announce and host official events, regardless what the senior admins on IRC say. It won't do harm. --LordMaster96 00:19, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
  • I think that we need to back the Penguin of the Month, Stamps or Contests! Nando144 Talk with me! 21:09, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
    • I agree. But for POTM I think we'll have to wait until the number of active users rise, or else we'll be nominating the same users over and over again. --LordMaster96 00:19, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
  • Maybe we should just split the administration into two? "IRC Social" for people like Seahorse, who doesn't check the wiki or play CP every so often, and "Wiki Social", for people like me and Nando who do play CP on a regular basis. The Wiki social admins could deal with stuff like official events, party ratings etc. --LordMaster96 05:38, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
    • DA MIEND OF A GENEUS HAZ YEW!!! In other words, great idea :P --LMGT Talk to tha donut dood! 07:36, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
    • I agree with LMGT. That's a cool idea, LM96! Also, I do like the idea of a party review page. LM96 made one before, and I used it for the two parties that it reviewed.
  • Ideas:
    • If you have a YouTube channel, you could make an advertisement to create interest in the wiki. I'm working on one now.
    • Tweet about the wiki.
    • Post about it on Facebook, Google+, etc.
    • GoogleAds?
    • Maybe we could create a separate "branch" of the wiki called CPWSocial where the main purpose is making friends and sharing ideas and opinions. That would bring some people to the wiki.
    • I like the categories on the sidebar. They're colorful and use a cool font; that's what people want to see. If it's possible, a smoother look. -ShrimpPin 00:10, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
      • We've been delaying the advertisement. I still have the files recorded from last June, and I'll make it by the end of the month (hopefully). Tweeting about it is also a good idea - I'll do so after I rack up more followers. Also, I don't think we need another branch wiki to be "social". We just want to be social, but not too much of it, or else it'll cause a problem with users socializing all the time and not editing articles like in the past. Good stuff though. --LordMaster96 00:14, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Ideas of my own:
    • Give the wiki a new skin. Here's one I made. Should be spiced up a bit however. But 11 lines makes a big difference. :)
    • Maybe a partnership page, with payment levels ranging from free to premium (ups to $7.50/month for a premium listing where your site is mentioned right smack in the sidebar).
    • Make the social media accounts more active.
    • Create an attractive blog design and promote it. I am happy to get the setup done.
    • Reach out to the many popular CP blogs and request partnerships! (LM, that means you!)

  • I may have quit this wiki, but I have some ideas. How about we make a new YouTube channel for the whole CPWN? I mean, admins of the wikis can post some videos on what's new in the CPW, CPFW, CPSW (yeah!), and the UNCPW. Something social could make the wiki popular! The CPSW and the CPFW are dying too! --mariocrossing1 03:50, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

I'd be glad to have this project back up the network's wikis. After the suggestions, here's a new list.

  • CP Party ratings (seems to be working so far, it's gotten users to interact).
  • Twitter: We have a lot of followers. Twitter is a great opportunity for us to grab users. We just need someone to maintain that account with the latest CP updates often (link to wiki blog posts).
  • In addition to Twitter, we should use the wiki blog more often. Before we go ahead, make sure we have a penguin-friendly theme, background (optional) and header.
  • Facebook: I'd still prefer Twitter, but if we use Facebook and get more likes, this may have a chance as well.
  • Maybe add a featured artwork section or something?
  • A new look for the wiki (the skin).
  • Partnership system

--LordMaster96 07:45, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

  • It may be only me, but I think Monaco is way more friendly than Vector. I think we should use Monaco as the default skin. --PenBlooeR 18:32, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
    • Agreed! Totally! --Cylly1512 20:20, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
  • I really like the artwork idea! Also, I think the Monaco should be back, like Pen said. If some ads accept PayPal, I'll do some of that.

  • I've put a link to you on my blog --Benfll 06:31, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Update: February 10, 2012

I'll provide any new ideas or updates through an update post every week. For now, here are the main points:

  • A council meeting will be scheduled soon. I'm just waiting for Seahorse to make the announcement...
  • In the meeting, Monaco will be voted on by the council members. I am personally for it.
  • Regarding the wiki blog, there's a list of things I think we can do to slightly improve it for now:
    • Invite all wiki administrators to post automatically, if they desire.
    • All staff have the admin function to invite users to post.
    • Have a blog sign-up sheet for those who are interested in posting. Network staff can then review information.
    • Make the width smaller. The blog post area seems too wide in my opinion.
  • Twitter: use TwitterFeed. This way, any new blog posts would be posted onto Twitter automatically without us having to Tweet. It could also keep the account active every once in a while.

Comments

Fully supported. I might also try some risky "changes" that need to get approved by the council then, but some of this is staff-related:

  • Move the inactive wikis to TropicalWikis and close the CPWN ones, possibly leaving redirects behind (this feature was implemented some time ago in the LocalSettings.php file). This will need to be staff and council approved. A sitenotice will be put up on the TropicalWikis sites -- here's my version. This is my list:
  • Remove some extensions (council and staff approval here):
    • OpenID is not much used and spews out a chunk of errors on the logs. A small amount of users use OpenID as a sole login, and those users may use IRC to get a regular password from staff instead.
    • MetaKeywordsTag was made a stub a long, long time ago. It has to go, but AndrewBot will need to mass-modify a lot of pages for that.
    • SpamBlacklist's needs were replaced a long time ago with CAPTCHA questions.
  • Migrate the blog back to WordPress. (Just council here.)
  • Get rid of the forums. Nobody posts in them now. (Council and staff)

Afterwards, we will see some more room for growth and make us more appealing to other CP blogs and sites by not having as many errors and abandoned wikis. Andrew (It is he who makes the butter fly) 03:04, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

We're using Linode now. Andrew (It is he who makes the butter fly) 06:12, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I support the move back to WordPress. Is there even a link to the blog in the main page? --PenBlooeR 14:02, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

  • I like those ideas. If you need a blogger/ council member, I'm available. -ShrimpPin
  • If you Google for 'club penguin wiki' then the first result is the old wiki so most of the people who search for us are probably on that wiki so a good idea might be to shut it down if we can. --Benfll 06:28, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

February 18 Update from Seahorseruler

I think one of our top priorities is advertising ourselves on other forums/blogs/CP websites. We need to get as many people as possible to know about us. We also need to take our google ranking seriously. We can't brush it off to the side anymore. We have to find extensions that improve SEO. Also, we should find or create a blog extension similar to Wikia's so we can post news updates here not on a separate site. I will begin looking for something that will work or have one created for us. --Seahorseruler (Talk Page) (Contribs) 22:12, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Also, let's install AWC's Forum so we don't have to open up another site for the forums. As for blogs, there's Wikilog. Andrew (It is he who makes the butter fly) 22:15, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Good idea. We (andrew) should make a Project wonderful ad. Heck, maybe even a full-fledged advertisment! --Broseph16 ARR!! 22:54, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
These are great ideas for making the wiki more social, but we can't forget that our main aim is to create articles and get the most info possible on everything about Club Penguin. --PenBlooeR 22:57, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
With all do respect Pen, We have articles on almost EVERYTHING! I'd say we spread our wings and make it our main focus to advertise. If you ask me, Wikipedia is our best chance as is. --Broseph16 ARR!! 23:30, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm not against these ideas, but if there are going to be forums and blogs here, there should be policies for them as well, or else, CPW will turn into CPSW2 --PenBlooeR 23:37, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Just an idea, we should remove the CP Fandom Wiki, and the Other language CPW from {{CPWikis}} --Broseph16 ARR!! 19:21, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
I disagree, they're all part of the network. --PenBlooeR 19:33, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
@Broseph16 It's spelled "due". :P I think we should use Google AdWords to advertise. -ShrimpPin 12:57, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Google AdWords costs a lot, and may end up in no gain, and a lot of loss. We might consider it once our Project Wonderful account reaches $20. Andrew (It is he who makes the butter fly) 21:03, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Shall I fund it? I have $50 to spare --No guts, No glory! 21:06, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Let's save it for Linode. ;) Andrew (It is he who makes the butter fly) 22:23, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
  • I wouldn't use AdWords. To me, the best way of getting people interested is through fan blogs. But sadly, the CPW different bloggers only know of (due to the Google rankings) is the Wikia one. --LordMaster96 [CPW Admin • Staff] 23:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Henceforth, we need to SHUT DOWN the wikia wiki!
If only it was this simple. Wikia staff won't let them simply close the wiki, it makes them lots of $$$ on ads. --PenBlooeR 02:11, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
If we can't shut it down then we should edit the main page so it redirects you to the new wiki.--Benfll 20:25, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
